SANTIAGO, Feb 6 (AFP) - The Chilean club Colo Colo, which has debts of nearly 30 million dollars, has been plunged into further crisis after its president and a key player walked out.
Peter Dragicevic said his decision to stand down as president was made "to allow the club to restructure and function" while striker Hector Tapia is looking for a new job after rejecting a 70 percent cut in players' salaries.
That last draconian measure was introduced by the judicial administrator - now in control of the cash-strapped side after it went into liquidation last month.
The extent of Colo Colo's debt is an unwelcome record for the Chilean league. In back pay alone they owe 600,000 dollars, according to the country's professional football players' union.
Colo Colo's woes have arisen against a backdrop of falling attendances, a dip in advertising revenue and general disillusionment on the terraces among fans about Chile's failure to book a ticket to this year's World Cup finals.
