▶ Klinsmann parts ways with Korea Republic [2024/02/18   ]

The Korea Football Association made the announcement on Friday following a two-and-a-half hour meeting at their headquarters in Seoul, which was led by KFA president Chung Mong-gyu.

"The KFA has decided to change the national head coach following a comprehensive review," Chung said.

"Klinsmann has failed to display managerial capability and leadership expected of a national head coach in areas ranging from tactics, personnel management to work attitude and others required to bring about competitiveness to the team.

"Klinsmann's attitude and competitiveness as head coach has fallen short of people's expectations and it was agreed that this would not be improved going forward, so we have decided to change leadership ahead of 2026 World Cup qualifying games."

“To all players, my coaching staff and all Korean football fans with sincere gratitude,” Klinsmann wrote on social media after being informed of the decision.

“Thank you so much for all your support taking us to the semi-final of the Asian Cup and an incredible journey over the last 12 months with not losing 13 games in a row. Keep on fighting.”

Klinsmann was appointed in March last year to replace Paulo Bento but failed to pick up a win in any of his first five games in charge.

However, after a 1-0 victory over Saudi Arabia in England in September, Klinsmann’s team won six matches in a row ahead of the start of the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023 in mid-January.

With a squad featuring Son Heung-min, Lee Kang-in, Hwang Hee-chan and Kim Min-jae, the Koreans went into the Finals among the favourites and were looking to claim the title for the first time since 1960.

After an opening win over Bahrain, the Koreans drew against Jordan and Malaysia in the group phase and needed a penalty shoot-out to defeat Saudi Arabia before an extra-time win over Australia in the quarter-finals.

They then lost 2-0 to Jordan in the semi-finals without registering a shot on target throughout the entire 90 minutes at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium.
